Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came and the winds blew and beat on that house but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it. – Matthew 7:24-27
I am going to guess that if you are reading this post you already know where I am as I sit here and write this blog post. For those of you who may be unaware, I and six others are on a mission trip in Pathanapuram which is a city in the state of Kerala India.
India is a beautiful land and I am amazed at our Father’s handy work. When I look around at all the wonders of his work they are so different from back home in Iowa, but yet it is clearly the handy work of the same one true and living God! But there is a dark side to this beautiful country. It is a country that does not know the one true God that created all of its beauty. It is a country that has built its house on the shifting sands of false idols.
India has chosen to worship the things created by man rather than worship the creator of this world. They try to earn favor with gods that do not see, hear, breath, or talk, but before you shake your head in disgust the same way that I use to do, let me ask you a few questions.
I am going to guess that the verse that I opened my blog with is a familiar one to you and that you more than likely feel that you have built your house on the rock of Jesus. But have you? Have you proclaimed Jesus Christ to be your savior and Lord? Are you willing to to risk everything that you hold precious to you in this world for the calling that Jesus has placed upon your life as a professed follower of Christ? Are you willing to be rejected by your family, friends, coworkers, or even lose your job and all of your earthly security and maybe even your life for this Jesus that you claim to love?
Have you counted the cost of truly following Jesus? And if so are you willing too be completely obedient to the command of Jesus? My guess is that you are like most of us and the cost of following Jesus is something that never crosses your mind. That’s likely because, for the most part we are free to proclaim ourselves as followers of Christ without suffering any cost to our well being.
I want you to take a moment and consider whether or not you would be so quick to proclaim your self as a Christian if you knew that you were going to lose everything: your job, money, house. Or that your family would reject you and have nothing to do with or even beat you physically because of your faith. My guess is that most of us back in America would not be willing to pay the price. It would be too much of a sacrifice on our life – of our comfort and ease – that we as Americans feel entitled to.
Today in India I had the great honor of taking part in a graduation ceremony. It was not a graduation from high school or a secular college, but a graduation from Grace Christian Ministry College.
There were 19 young people that graduated today and each one of them has counted the cost of being obedient to Christ as the step into a life of Christian ministry. They are following the command of Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20 they are boldly stepping out in this dark nation where it is illegal to proclaim Christ, and to do so more than likely will cost them everything but yet they go rejoicing singing and dancing before their Father praising him for calling them out of this dark are twisted world.
They are following Christ wherever he leads them, they do so without any worldly guarantees of wealth and prosperity, but yet they go because there inheritance is in heaven! Not here in this broken world that has nothing to offer but death and eternal damnation!
They have built their house on the solid rock of Jesus Christ for they know that all other ground is sinking sand! They will be able to withstand the waves of this world, as 1 Peter 1:5, “who by Gods power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
These 19 young preachers have proven themselves to be wise men for they counted the cost and they know Jesus is more precious then anything of this world!
So I ask you where have you built your house? Are you truly living on the rock of Jesus? Have you counted the cost? Is Jesus the most precious gift you have ever received? If you answered yes to all of these, I have one last question: does your life reflect it?
Has God called you to follow Jesus? If so I pray that you count the cost and build your house on the solid rock of Christ and not in the sinking sand of this world!
