Momentary Afflictions

The team has had a seamless travel so far on our trip to Kerala, India. We are in the midst of our final flight from Dubai to India. Praise God for his travel mercies.

It has caused me to think back to the missionaries of the past. They would have likely traveled for months on the sea wondering if they would make it. Maybe the worries would have been if they would have enough food, being sick dysentery or scurvy,, or maybe ship wrecked. They wouldn’t have been concerned about comforts we have today such as vaccinations or whether they have started their malaria medication, or concerned about how much leg room their seat provided. Our inconveniences seem to pale in comparison to what they would have faced!

I’m reminded of 2 Corinthians 4:16-17, “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day, for this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.”

God places a call on our lives. For some it may be missions and for others it will be something else. The point is that no matter what he has called you to, there will be difficulties of varying degrees. But as we persevere in obedience, he is preparing something much greater for us in the long run. Something so glorious that even the missionaries long ago will look back on those challenges they faced and think of them as light and momentary.

Psalm 96:3 reminds us to “Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!” This command is what compels us to persevere through hardship and trials as we run this race of endurance of faith and obedience. To God be the glory!
